Installing Charter
Install from the Marketplace, find the hub, and check you have the right permissions.
Install
Charter is installed from the Visual Studio Marketplace onto an Azure DevOps organisation, like any other extension. Installing it requires permission to manage extensions for the organisation.
Where to find it
Charter is a collection administration hub. After installation it appears under:
Organisation settings → Charter
It is not a project-level hub, so you will not find it alongside Boards, Repos or Pipelines inside a project. Everything Charter changes spans projects, which is why it lives at the organisation level.
Permissions you need
Charter acts as you. It cannot read or write anything your own account cannot, so the permissions you need are the ones you would need to make the same changes by hand:
- Project Collection Administrators, or equivalent rights over process configuration, to change work item types.
- Administrator on an environment or service connection to add checks to it.
- Permission to manage service hook subscriptions in a project, to configure webhooks.
If Charter can see a resource but not write to it, the write fails for that resource and is reported individually — the rest of the apply continues. You will see which ones failed.
The three tabs
| Tab | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Processes | Work item types: fields, states, rules and layout, per inherited process. |
| Projects | Environment checks, service connection checks and webhooks, per project. |
| License | Trial status, subscription or licence key, and this organisation's ID. |
Next
Work through your first change, which applies a small, safe configuration end to end so you can see the confirmation, the snapshot and the apply preview before you depend on them.
